Racing makes decimal point as traditional betting system faces the chop

The beginning of the end for the traditional betting system of odds and fractions has been signalled by the Racing For Change group.

It also appears to be curtains for the colourful but often bemusing historic jargon of racing. Both are targets of the team charged with making the sport relevant to a 21st century audience in a list of initiatives announced on Tuesday.

Terms like ‘weighed in’, ‘hanging’ and ‘Rule 4’, regularly used by racecourse announcers, looked doomed.
